As of July 2016, you can legally grow your own medicine in 15 states and Washington DC. Here’s the list:
Alaska
- Allowable Amount: Up to 6 plants, with no more than 3 mature.
- Additional Requirements: Alaska Marijuana License.

Arizona
- Allowable Amount: Up to 12 plants.
- Additional Requirements: Patient’s residence is farther than 25 miles from a state-licensed dispensary facility. Growing must be in an enclosed, locked facility. Arizona Medical Marijuana Registrry ID Card.

California
- Allowable Amount: Up to 12 plants, with no more than 6 mature. May differ by county.
- Additional Requirements: Physician’s letter recommending the use of medical marijuana.
- Note: Medical Marijuana Identification Card is not required. (Participation in the ID program and registry allows law enforcement and the public to verify the validity of a qualified patient or primary caregiver’s MMIC as authorization to possess, grow, transport, and/or use medical marijuana within California.)

Colorado
- Allowable Amount: Up to 6 plants, with no more than 3 mature.
- Additional Requirements: Growing must be in an enclosed, locked space, not conducted openly or publicly, and not made available for sale. Grower must be over 21. Colorado Medical Marijuana Card.

DC
- Allowable Amount: Up to 6 plants, with no more than 3 mature.
- Additional Requirements: Growing must be in primary residence. Grower must be over 21. All persons living in a single single house or single rental unit may not grow more than 12 cannabis plants total, with 6 or fewer being mature. Patient ID card for Medical Marijuana Program.

Hawaii
- Allowable Amount: Up to 7 plants.

Maine
- Allowable Amount: Up to 6 mature plants.
- Additional Requirements: Growing must be in enclosed locked location. Grower must be over 21 and have a Medical Marijuana Certificate from their licensed Maine physician or nurse practitioner.

Massachusetts
- Allowable Amount: Limited amount sufficient to maintain a 60-day supply.
- Additional Requirements: Growing must be in enclosed locked location. Requires cultivation registration which may be issued to a qualifying patient whose access to a medical treatment center is limited by verified financial hardship, a physical incapacity to access reasonable transportation, or the lack of a treatment center within a reasonable distance of the patient’s residence. Michigan
- Allowable Amount: Up to 12 plants.
- Additional Requirements: Growing must be in an enclosed, locked facility. Michigan Medical Marihuana Program ID Card.

Montana
- Allowable Amount: Up to 4 mature flowering plants and 12 seedlings. (In Montana, seedlings must be under 12 inches in height and diameter).
- Additional Requirements: Montana Marijuana Registry Patient ID card and Landlord Permission Form (if home is a rental).

Nevada
- Allowable Amount: Up to 12 plants
- Additional Requirements: The dispensaries in your county are closed or unable to supply the quantity or strain of marijuana that you need; or you (or your caregiver) are “unable reasonably to travel” to a dispensary due to illness or lack of transportation; or at the time you applied for your card, there was no dispensary within 25 miles of your home. New Mexico
- Allowable Amount: Up to 4 mature plants and 12 immature (non-flowering) plants (16 total).
- Additional Requirements: Personal Production License (PPL).

Oregon
- Allowable Amount: Up to 6 mature plants.
- Additional Requirements: Grower must be over 21 and have a valid Oregon Medical Marijuana Card.

Rhode Island
- Allowable Amount: Up to 12 plants.
- Additional Requirements: Grower must be over 21 and have a valid Oregon Medical Marijuana Card.

Vermont
- Allowable Amount: Up to 2 mature plants and 7 immature.
- Additional Requirements: Single secure indoor facility, such as an outbuilding or room equipped with locks or other security devices that only permits access to the registered patient and his or her registered caregiver.
